Jumping Jenny and The Belmount Food Company
Chris and Gillie Addison took over the business of Jumping Jenny Coffee House in early 1991. The business, then a somewhat run-down tea-room, was situated in the former stables of Brantwood, John Ruskin’s former home on the east side of Coniston Water.
Neither Chris nor Gillie had had any formal catering training, although both had experience of private entertaining. Chris had been a litigation lawyer in the City and the West End. Gillie, who hails from New Zealand, had worked for stockbrokers in Sydney, Australia and in Executive Recruitment in London.
For over twenty years, Chris and Gillie built the business of Jumping Jenny, on the basis of good, honest, unpretentious food, locally sourced, and well presented. “…. quite the best food we had all week – simple, homely and exceedingly well made..” was the verdict of Tony Turnbull, the Food and Wine Editor of The Times.
After a few years, they needed to find some premises into which to expand the wedding and evening party business which had developed at the Brantwood premises. In late 1998, they had the chance to take over and renovate a Grade II Listed Georgian house just outside Hawkshead, near Ambleside, in the Lake District, and to create a unique wedding venue. Belmount Hall opened in December 2006, and offers Wedding Weekend House Parties, with exclusive use, and“.. the best food ever at a wedding..” (according to numerous guests and two independent wedding photographers …. ).
After over twenty years at Brantwood, the time had come to move on, and the Jumping Jenny business was looking for a new home. Out of the blue, a long-standing customer of Jumping Jenny asked whether it might be possible for Jumping Jenny to supply the new Barn Café at Swarthmoor Hall with cakes and flans. This was the perfect opportunity for the next stage, so Gillie is helping with the setting up of The Barn Café at Swarthmoor Hall, and as from early July, the Jumping Jenny product – cakes, savoury and sweet flans, and traybakes such as the famous Best Caramel Shortbread, and more, will be available there.
