Terms and conditions

  1. Accommodation
  2. Course participants usually have their own individual room.
  3. Course participants can share a room upon request.
  4. Rooms (single, twin, or double) are located in the west wing of the old hall or the adjacent buildings.
  5. Most rooms are en-suite and three rooms are accessible.
  1. Arrival and departure
  2. Course participants are expected to arrive from 2.00 pm.
  3. Course participants usually take part in an informal gathering in the Friendship Room for tea and cake from 4.00 pm.
  4. Course participants are expected to vacate their rooms by 10.00 am on the day of departure. Luggage can be left in the main conference room and keys should be returned to the office/key drop box.
  1. Travel and transport
  2. There is parking for guests at the entrance of Swarthmoor Hall.
  3. Taxis from and to Ulverston station are available. It is essential to book in advance.
  4. Swarthmoor Hall is accessible by foot from Ulverston station, although for guests pulling or carrying a suitcase this is not advisable. Please visit this page for itineraries.
  1. Accessibility
  2. We would like Swarthmoor Hall to be accessible and welcoming to all. The old hall was constructed in the 16th century and is a listed building, which means that there are certain access limitations, for people with limited mobility.
  3. Three of our guest rooms are accessible and fully equipped with mobility aided bathrooms
  4. When booking via our website, let us know about your accessibility requirements and we will ensure to book one of our accessible rooms for you (subject to availability).
  5. The ground floor of the old hall is accessible to people in non-motorised wheelchairs. The upper levels are not accessible.
  6. No specialised care can be provided for guests therefore a carer should accompany those who need individual assistance.
  1. Catering
  2. Course participants are catered for together as part of the course programme.
  3. Meals are based on a menu (rather than a buffet).
  4. All meals are vegetarian.
  5. We are able to cater for vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets. When booking via our website, let us know if you have any dietary requirements so that we can provide a special meal for you.
  1. Pets
  2. Pets are not allowed in the rooms (except service and assistance dogs).
  1. Course cancellation by a guest

This cancellation policy covers both Swarthmoor Hall courses and Woodbrooke courses held at Swarthmoor Hall:

  1. If you notify us of a cancellation by 7.00 am on the 56th day (8 weeks) prior to the event, you will receive a full refund.
  2. If you notify us of a cancellation at any time between 7.00 am on the 56th day (8 weeks) and 7.00 am on the 21st day (3 weeks) prior to the event, we will retain 20% and refund any remaining money paid.
  3. For any cancellations notified after 7.00 am on the 21st day (3 weeks) prior to the event, no refunds will be issued.
  1. Course cancellation by Swarthmoor Hall or Woodbrooke

This cancellation policy covers both Swarthmoor Hall courses and Woodbrooke courses held at Swarthmoor Hall:

  1. If the course you are booked on is cancelled you will receive a full refund.
  1. Provisos
  2. Change of content or tutor: We make every effort to run courses as advertised. However, there may be occasions when we have to change course content and/or tutors. Swarthmmor Hall and Woodbrooke reserve the right to make these changes. In such instances, no reductions or refunds are available and the normal Cancellation Policy applies.
  3. Insurance: We recommend that you consider taking out cancellation insurance to provide cover in the event of having to have to cancel your booking due to unforeseen circumstances. Swarthmoor Hall and Woodbrooke are not able to recommend an insurance provider.
  4. In the instance of the minimum number of participants not being met for a course, you will be fully refunded.
  1. Booking
  2. If we are unable to take your booking, given that the course is full, we will enter your name on a waiting list and inform you if and when a place can be offered.
  3. After completion of your booking, a confirmation and receipt will be sent by email.
  4. The Hall does not currently have a bursary fund.
  1. Payments
  2. We expect full payment in advance for all courses booked online. If you prefer, you can contact our office and pay a 20% deposit to secure your place and pay the balance latest 21 days before the course date. If you notify us of a cancellation at any time between 56 days and 21 days before your course date, we will retain your deposit.
  1. Additional stay
  2. Course participants are welcome to extend their stay at Swarthmoor Hall.
  3. We offer a special reduced rate for one night’s B&B before or after a course.
  4. When booking via our website, let us know you would like to add an additional stay and we will contact you to make arrangements (subject to availability).
  1. Non-participants
  2. Partners who wish to accompany someone attending a course may do so paying the difference between the full room rate and the single occupancy rate.
  3. All meals are extra.
  4. Partners may be able to join the group for meals at the discretion of the tutorial team.
